The Government of Meghalaya, Health & Family Welfare Department, has established the Shillong Medical College (SMC) with the objective of strengthening medical education and enhancing healthcare services within the State. Foundation & Early Governance The idea for an institute on these hills arose in 1906; it received its first patient on 16 January 1917. Originally the King Edward VII Memorial Pasteur Institute, it was led by Col. R. Knowles and overseen by the Assam Medical Research Society until 1945. Vaccine Production & Diagnostics Built on the Pasteurian model, the institute produced Neural Anti-Rabies vaccine and other essential sera, and served as a diagnostic and technician-training hub for the region until 2005. Institutional Transition & Legacy Governance passed from Assam to Meghalaya in 1972. The campus is now being transformed into the Academic Block of Shillong Medical College, carrying the legacy forward into modern medical education.
